About Silver Nanowires and Its Applications

Silver Nanowires are nanomaterials with high electrical conductivity, resistance to oxidation, and great optical & antibacterial properties. Silver Nanowires also performs great in transparent conducting electrodes for touchscreens, solar cells, flexible displays, sensors, light-emitting diodes, etc. These nanowires can be included in many products like textiles, antibacterial bandages, and EMI shielding.

Additionally, silver nanowires have been great as conductive fillers for combined applications. Now, it is essential that the minimum amount of silver is used for establishing the electrical connection in the final matrix, also known as the percolation threshold. Due to its high aspect ratio, silver nanowires can easily reach percolation at concentrations of less than 1%.

With great electrical, optical, and thermal properties, silver nanowires have great possibilities for developing advanced technology applications. They are available in powder and dispersion form. The Silver Nanowire powder can be easily blended with polymers, like polyurethane and epoxy, for EMI shielding, thermal conductors, etc.

Application of Silver Nanowires

Silver Nanowires have been widely used in biological and electronic applications, in addition to water sterilization and transparent conducting electrodes. It has also been a favorable alternative to indium tin oxide for electronics applications. One more beneficial factor of nano-silver is that its properties can be adjusted to fulfill the printing technique requirements such as roll-to-roll, gravure, spray printing, slot-die, flexographic, and inkjet printing. Let’s see some more of its applications.

Optical: It includes solar cells, SRP sensors, surface-enhanced spectroscopy, optical equipment, medical imaging, etc.

Conductor: This includes intensive LEDs, conductive inks, touch screen display, conformal electronics, filler for conductive adhesives, conductive adhesives, EMI shielding coatings, smart fabrics, RFID antenna & batteries, and super capacitors.

Chemical and Thermal Applications: It consists of batteries, sensors, catalysts, heat dissipation, etc.

Antimicrobial Applications: This includes coatings for medical devices, bandages, and membranes for sterilization and water disinfection.

Final Consideration

The nano silver technology, as a whole, has been broadly used these days, in coating the surface of electronics, carbon blocks, woods, metals, papers, ceramics, glass, fiber, etc. The essence of the Nano Silver technology has been the ability to produce particles as small as possible and then distribute them evenly. Moreover, the surface area of any material increases a million times when the nanoparticles are coated on their surface. The increased surface provides a strong antibacterial effect with just a small amount of silver.

Due to their great electrical, optical, and thermal properties, silver nanowires will be used in the development of advanced technological applications, very soon. As silver nanowires are available in powder and dispersion forms, its usability also increases. For instance, silver nanowire powder is mixed with epoxy or polyurethane or any polymer for thermal conductors, EMI shielding, and other uses.
